GEOM. is the name of my first independent project. I have completed it as part of my EPQ course which I have decided to focus on furniture design. The aim of this project was to complete an in depth research about furniture design, visit different shows such as The Furniture Show in Birmingham and then complete my own project with a final piece being a piece of furniture. My initial idea was to create an armchair, however after completing some initial research I have realised that it would be too difficult to make for a person that is at the beginner level. Therefore, I have ended up deciding to make a dining table. The design brief was: To design and manufacture a contemporary dining table that would allow a minimum of 4 people to sit around it. The product should encourage people to socialise and eat with each other as people with busy lifestyles often tend to spend lots of time alone without their family or friends. It should fit in with the design of a contemporary home. Clients: The clients for my product are mainly females between the ages of 17 – 30. I have chosen this particular age range because people of these ages have quite busy lifestyles and often tend to spend less time with their family and friends as they mainly focus on their studies/ career. By creating a dining table that encourages people to eat together, I will give them the opportunity to spend more time with their loved ones. Throughout the course of the project I have completed things such as user consultation, visit to the environment of use, marketing strategy, design constraints, specification and initial ideas. All of these steps were vital for me to understand what kind of things should be done to make my product fit the brief and the needs of my target market. Even though I have completed all the necessary research, my product did not turn out perfect which I have later on I have described as things that would need to be further improved. Some of these things were the stability aspect of the product and the sizing of some of the components. Initial ideas: Final design: Final product:
